Could Wiglaf be considered a foil to Beowulf? Explain by referring to a specific passage.

Wiglaf was one of Beowulf’s most loyal soldiers. He was always there for Beowulf and he was willing to give his life for him as well. Wiglaf helps Beowulf just as Beowulf helped King Hrothgar. Wiglaf could be considered a foil to Beowulf only by taking over the throne after Beowulf’s demise. Wiglaf was a strong warrior and was rewarded for his excellence. Otherwise, Wiglaf was not a direct foil to Beowulf. His loyalty is reflected by his insistence to stay with Beowulf when the others chose to desert him. He tells the other warriors Beowulf is a great leader and deserves their assistance, “And we must go to him, while angry/Flames burn at his flesh, help/ Our glorious King! By almighty God./ I’d rather burn myself than see/ Flaming swirling around my lord” (Raffel 2648-2650). This quote shows the devotion and admiration of Wiglaf toward Beowulf. As Beowulf lays dying, he gives all he has to Wiglaf as Wiglaf is his only living heir. --Brittany and Ben
