Line 635- The only proper way to gain honor was to win it in battle or die for it. Beowulf says he will win fame from Grendel’s death or become just another victim.

Line 1385- Beowulf’s society puts a great emphasis on the wergild that it is better to avenge your comrades and family rather than mourn them forever. Also that any man who can bring honor and glory to his name should do so, the most common way was through violence in war or against monsters.

Line 2180- Even though violence and glory go hand in hand, one can only truly obtain glory by protecting others and fighting honorable in war. Not just showing your strength though drunken brawls or meaningless fighting.

Line 2730- Society sees it only to be proper that the armor that protected the father shall protect the son, but also it is a way for the father’s memory to remain alive. Since Beowulf has no heirs, he passes it to Wiglaf, the bravest of his followers. This act is still occurring today with wedding dresses and rings, cars, and heirlooms.
